Brooks Arcand Paul, known by the nehiyaw name sîpîysis (Little River), is the MLA for Edmonton–West Henday, elected in 2023. Brooks also serves as the Alberta NDP’s Shadow Minister for Indigenous Relations.
Brooks is nehiyaw (Cree) and the first Two Spirit MLA elected in Alberta, carrying forward cultural teachings, responsibility, and community advocacy with pride.
Brooks was raised on Alexander First Nation and is a direct descendent of catchistahwayskum, a nehiyaw leader who adhered to Treaty 6 at Fort Edmonton in 1877. Brooks brings a deep commitment to strengthening public education, protecting accessible healthcare, and supporting strong and enduring Treaty relationships grounded in shared responsibility.
Before being elected, Brooks served as legal counsel for Alexander First Nation, helping guide the Nation’s legal affairs. Brooks is a litigator who practiced Indigenous, employment, and commercial law. He contributed extensively to the Indigenous Bar Association, including serving as vice president.
Brooks has been honoured with the Aboriginal Role Models of Alberta Award (2016), the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Medal (2022) and the King Charles III Coronation Medal (2023).
Brooks lives in Edmonton–West Henday with his partner and their golden retriever Jake, close to much of their family.
